Evolving Company Culture Through Summer Events

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, the working world has changed forever. Some companies have opted for a hybrid approach to work, encouraging employees to come into the office a couple times each week. Other companies, like Motus, have decided to ditch the hefty rent prices of offices in exchange for flexible work and boosted productivity across their distributed workforce.

But how can companies who abandon the office maintain their company culture? In what ways can employees interact with one another and preserve a sense of camaraderie? Well, the office may be gone, but teams can still gather in co-working spaces, at sporting events or even in restaurants.

Now that summer is over, let’s reflect on a great couple months of team events at Motus.

Work Forward Popup Office – Boston, MA

Kicking off the summer, Boston-based Motus team members gathered at the Boston College Club downtown on June 23. Some team members met face-to-face for the first time, while others got to reconnect after a long time apart.

After a few hours of work at the B.C. Club, the team left for Legal Harborside in the Seaport to enjoy hors d’oeuvre and cocktails, sharing laughs, casual conversation and a beautiful view of the Boston Harbor. At the happy hour, Motus President and CEO Karen O’Byrne gave a few warm words of thanks and appreciation for the Motus team’s willingness and commitment to hard work and growth, explaining how important it is for us all to spend time with one another in-person.

Device QBR & Augusta Green Jackets Picnic – North Augusta, SC

A week after the Boston Work Forward Pop-up Office, members of our Device team gathered in North Augusta, South Carolina for a Quarterly Business Review and an Augusta Green Jackets baseball picnic at SRP Park.

The weather was ideal for summer drinks and BBQ at the ballpark as we welcomed more than 100 Motus device team members, family and friends for what became a double-header due to the previous night’s rainout. The Device unit of our business is a newer side of our business, so it was a productive event that brought together many new faces across the company.

SMarketing QBR – Chicago, IL

From July 11-13, our Sales and Marketing (SMarketing) team gathered in Chicago for three days of learning, team-building activities, product sessions and quality time together.

We got to hear from Product leaders about new solutions and Sales leadership unveiled a brand-new sales playbook for the team to adopt for future success in their roles. The group also got to experience a night at the historic Auditorium Theater, including a full tour of the historic theater, dinner on the stage and a special surprise singing performance from cabaret icon, Joan Curto.

On the final night of the QBR, talented members of the team put on a Motus Talent Show, featuring yo-yo tricks, cowbell and acoustic sets. I had the pleasure of performing an original rap song, meant to hype up different members of the SMarketing team, which ultimately took third place in the competition!

Overall, this QBR was a great success and allowed for many new members of the growing SMarketing organization to get to know one another over a couple of memorable and fun days in Chicago.

Work Forward Popup Office – Milwaukee, WI

On August 17, Milwaukee and Chicago-based team members gathered at Bottlehouse 42, a new and popular brewery, for our Milwaukee Work Forward Popup Office. The open concept of the brewery was conducive to team collaboration, meetings and some encouraging, inspiring words from our President and CEO, Karen O’Byrne.

After a successful day working and meetings, the team headed upstairs for a happy hour with appetizers, drinks and a nice view of the Milwaukee Bucks’ home stadium, The Fiserv Forum. This was a great opportunity for our Midwest team members to build camaraderie and see one another face-to-face.

Looking Ahead: Virtual Events and Beyond

This summer was an incredible opportunity to take advantage of nice weather and get team members together from across the country through in-person popup offices and sporting events. As we look ahead to the fall and winter months, Motus will be hosting a series of virtual events – like mixology classes, floral arrangement classes, chocolate tastings and much more. These events are great ways to keep team members connected for some after-work fun.
